Yes, Randomville is an active sheep just like everyone else and we produce “Top Whatever” lists at the end of the year. But for this one, we thought we’d just turn the controls over to someone who actually knows what they are talking about. That’s where indie music PR firm Team Clermont comes into play. They know what they are talking about.

As the year draws to a close, we at Team Clermont have put together a fancy list of ten records we’ve worked throughout the year that you may have missed.  They’ve been spinning in our office for quite a while and just in case they haven’t reached you yet, we wanted to give you another chance.  These records, in no way, represent a Team Clermont Top 10 records of the year.  They are merely a sampling of all of the wonderful records we’ve had the pleasure to be involved with in 2008.  And away we go!
Pattern is Movement – All Together (Hometapes)

Recently experiencing a transition from five to two, Pattern is Movement’s live musical genius is sure to make its way through your speakers.  From their ecstatic sounds to their enamoring live show, Pattern is Movement is comprised of just two guys, best friends at that: Chris Ward and Andrew Thibodeaux. With their backgrounds in classical music and minimalist tendencies, the two produced a record that is unlike anything else being done right now.  It’s hard to think it’s even possible that this Philadelphia duo could pump out such vibrant tunes, but as their fourth record, All Together really does prove it’s possible. Maybe their evangelical childhood is to blame for their divine musical presence, but one thing is for sure, All Together  will claim your praise.

The Lodger – Life is Sweet (Slumberland)

This indie pop band spurring from Leeds, UK released their second album in May of this year to a resounding positive reaction. Released only one year after their first critically acclaimed album, Grown Ups, their newest album, Life is Sweet, possesses the same bouncy pop and catchy hooks as before, but with a more mature, more… no pun intended, grown-up feel.
Having been compared to The Smiths, Orange Juice, and Suede, The Lodger has made an album that takes you on an excursion through lead singer, Ben Siddall’s experiences of life and love and the bumps along the way.  Their sometimes bitter, sometimes sensitive lyrics join with their classic Brit-pop melodic guitars to leave you feeling charmed with a sense that perhaps life really is sweet after all.

The Instruments РDark Sm̴land (Orange Twin)

The most notable thing about The Instruments isn’t their fancy all-star Athens, GA line-up, but instead their melodic combination of harmonious vocals, guitars and drums that produce a sort-of folk-pop beauty. Dark Småland is The Instruments’ third release and is now out on Orange Twin Records.  The Instruments are compiled of Heather McIntosh (Elf Power, Japancakes, Dark Meat), Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel), Peter Erchick, Will Hart, and John Fernandes (all of Olivia Tremor Control and Circulatory System).  This impressive line-up of musicians work together beautifully with their instruments to create a pop album so deeply layered with music that you’ll want to keep it on repeat in hopes of discovering something new each time around.

Liz Durrett – Outside Our Gates (WARM)

Outside Our Gates is Liz Durrett’s third album on Warm Records.  The American singer/song-writer released Outside Our Gates, produced by indie rock legend Eric Bachmann, in September.  The album mixes soft, ambient tracks with beautiful, explosive tracks all while keeping the focus on Liz’s signature vocals.  As if her beautiful voice and dreamy, dark guitars isn’t enough, the record is decorated with many guest appearances by her uncle, Vic Chesnutt, Brian Causey of Man or Astro-Man?, Amanda Kapousouz of Tin Cup Prophette and members of Ham1.

Simon Bookish – Everything/Everything (Tomlab)

Simon Bookish (originally named Leo Chadburn) is a London based composer and performer who released his third album, Everything/Everything on the German record label, Tomlab in October.  His experience with classical music composition is evident throughout this album as an amalgamation of instruments presents itself.  The mixture of piano, saxophone, and harp with Bookish’s peculiar British vocals creates an impressive assortment of sounds that is sure to fascinate the ears.

Matthew and the Arrogant Sea – Family, Family, Family Meets the Magic Christian (Nova Posta)

Family, Family, Family Meets the Magic Christian, released in late October, is the Matthew and the Arrogant Sea’s debut release as well as the first release from the newly formed LP only label Nova Posta Vinyl.  Hailing from Denton, Texas, Matthew and the Arrogant Sea share more than a passing similarity to groups like Fleet Foxes. Tacks, the Boy Disaster, and maybe even a little Beach House.  This exciting pop album is festooned with catchy guitar and infectious bells that are sure to get your feet moving.

Ruby Isle – Night Shot (Kindercore)

It’s almost impossible to stay seated throughout the entirety of this electrifying dance-pop record.  Ruby Isle is made up of three eccentric personalities that often times claim to be one: Dan Gellar (I am the World Trade Center), Mark Mallman, and Aaron Lemay.  Best friends throughout their life, Dan and Mark were forced 1200 miles apart after high school only to record Night Shot several years later – much thanks to the internet.  After recording in a Minneapolis church basement and e-mailed to Athens, GA, Gellar added the finishing digital touches and this explosive dance-pop record was born.  Take precautions when listening to this record.  The exciting, catchy choruses will easily get stuck in your head and your body will refuse to remain still.  This record definitely calls for some dancing shoes.

Michael Zapruder – Dragon Chinese Cocktail Horoscope (SideCho)

Michael Zapruder (California singer/songwriter) released his fourth album, Dragon Chinese Cocktail Horoscope on SideCho Records in October. Zapruder and Scott Solter (Spoon, John Vanderslice, Mountain Goats) combined their talents to produce Dragon in a short two week period. With resonating vocals that have on several occasions been compared to Rufus Wainwright and Andrew Bird, Dragon mixes a variety of styles to produce an ethereal and sometimes intense record.

Absentee – Victory Shorts (Memphis Industries

Victory Shorts is London-based Absentee’s third album and was released on Memphis Industries this year.  From track to track, Victory Shorts possesses an energy all its own, offering its audience a disc full of sing-along pop songs about the tragedies of the heart.  That may sound heavy, but in the genius that is Victory Shorts, the record never comes off as unbearably melancholy.  Drawing from influences from years past, lead singer Dan Michaelson’s gravelly deep vocals combine with the lighthearted pop tunes to create their strongest, most sincere record to date.

The Theater Fire – Matter and Light (SR)

This seven-piece from Fort Worth, Texas released their third full-length album, Matter and Light on SR in December.  The Theater Fire has been playing together since 2001 and grabs influence from a variety of musicians, such as George Jones, the Velvet Underground, and Lambchop.  Matter and Light is heavily decorated with an amalgamation of instruments.  Horns, banjo, piano, accordion, fiddles, and several other traditional instruments, as well as the classic bass, drums, guitar work together to produce a perfect Texan sound.

Let's hear what you have to say.....
