Joe Strummer was a complex man. Being the frontman for what was arguably the best punk band ever, Strummer managed to transcend its limitations because of his love for music of all genres.

Perhaps it comes as no surprise that Strummer’s generosity when it came to helping musicians from all walks of life spurned Strummerville: The Joe Strummer Foundation For New Music. It’s an organization created to provide opportunities for musicians who might not otherwise have that chance.

And while the fact this charity continues so many years after Strummer’s death is a testament to the man himself, one must not overlook the other members of The Clash as well, who shared the same ethos.

Which brings me to  Topper Headon, the Clash’s drummer. The man nicely put up his customized Mini Cooper for a six week raffle that began this past 30th of May.

Here’s what he had to say about it in the press release:

“This car has been my pride and joy. I had it two tone customized and it was the first car I drove when I got clean, so you can imagine I’ve been attached to it and have loved it a lot. But, I so love the great work that Strummerville are doing so am delighted to donate the car to be raffled and I hope it will make a fortune for the charity. Giving kids a chance is such a good cause.” - Love Topper

You too can own a piece of The Clash history by entering the raffle. Go to the strummerville.com site and enter. You still have five and a half weeks. Tickets are priced at £10, and you’re helping out a worthy cause, too.

(As a side note, a few days ago I coincidentally watched Julien Temple’s lovingly directed biopic on Joe Strummer called The Future is Unwritten. What a great insight into not only the Clash but Strummer himself, with lots of interviews from people who knew him best. It is interspersed with live performances, snippets of his radio program and it also makes mention of the charity  as well. If you have any interest in punk rock in 1970’s Britain this is as close to the source as you can get.)
