With festival season in full effect, we hope you get out and enjoy one of the many outdoor live music events to choose from. Among them here in Washington is my personal favorite, the Summer Meltdown. This year marks the tenth anniversary and it’s just over a week away—August 5th-8th! The buzz is in the air and MDX promises to be the best yet and Randomville will be there once again to capture the magic and bring you a full recap.

The vast display of Northwest talent on this year’s lineup will be memorable. Included on the impressive roster is Flowmotion, The Presidents of the United States of America, McTuff, Manooghi Hi and Panda Conspiracy all hailing from Seattle, as well as our B.C. brethren from Vancouver, Delhi 2 Dublin and Five Alarm Funk. Artists from farther flung include Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk from New Orleans, EOTO featuring Jason Hann and Michael Travis (previously of String Cheese Incident) and The Mutayor out of Los Angeles. The four day festival includes more than 30 bands and is the largest independent camping and music festival in the Northwest.

Besides heaps of great music, there is also tons of fun for the kids. Meltdown organizers focus heavily on creating a family friendly atmosphere and this year’s festival will offer a variety of kid-friendly activities that promote creativity and showcase growing talent.  The Little Seahorse Music Academy gives kids the opportunity to participate in instrumental workshops which will end with a finale main stage performance on Sunday of the festival. The Village Stage will host daily talent shows, giving kids a chance to perform during a special segment, “Meltdown’s Got Talent.”

As I stated earlier, the Summer Meltdown is my favorite festival. Read my coverage from Meltdown 2009 and you’ll see why.  It’s the festival trifecta or “festifecta” as I like to call it; the perfect combo of venue, crowd and music. I am part of a Seattle live music google group and one of my fellow jammers had this to say in a recent post:  “What I have thought (and felt) for years is that the best thing about Summer Meltdown is the vibe and atmosphere.  An exceptional group of people always gather for the event and it is that loving healing vibe that keeps me coming back year after year.”

I couldn’t agree more. See you at MDX.

INSIDER TIP: This year, Saturday night’s festivities will include a costume party. So if you’re heading to Meltdown, dig out your favorite costume or better yet, come up with something new for the big ten year anniversary celebration!
