Hype is a dirty, filthy monster who NEVER gives you what you’re hoping for. I am always wary of falling into hype whether it is music, video games, movies, heck even dates. But sometimes we as human beings fall prey to the very things we try to avoid (not talking about alcoholics and druggies, so if you read that just now and thought Man, I get you, then stop reading now). I fell into such hype in the excitement surrounding Dan Black.

Here’s a brief history session: Dan Black was the frontman of the London-based band The Servant. The band is most famous for their song “Cells” which was used for the trailers of the movie Sin City. They released two records (the latter, entitled How To Destroy A Relationship, should also be noted as one of the best-written albums in my lifetime) and earned massive acclaim in UK, France, Italy, and South America before breaking up in 2007.

In early 2008 Dan Black created a MySpace page with demos of him covering the Notorious B.I.G. track “Hypnotize.” Using drums from the track “Umbrella” by Rihanna and Mr. Blacks distinctive voice, the track (renamed “HYPNTZ” by Black) stunned the online community.

HYPNTZ

As the weeks grew into months, word of mouth began to spread more and more, until finally in the beginning of July 2009 we were presented with the debut record, ((UN)).

Now, before going into what makes this album great, I believe it must be noted that if there was ever a category for hardest-working musical act, then Mr. Black and his live crew (French bassist Frederic Pruchon, Keyboardist Fredi Sibbel, and Guitarist Nick Pell) certainly take that award two times over.

But as I said before, this is only Black’s live crew. Meaning that before recruiting them, Mr. Black made this record himself. Yes, you heard me. All the sounds you hear, every guitar chord and lyric sung was recorded by Mr. Black.

What sets ((UN)) apart from other albums is its pure fusion of all genres of music, and surprisingly it works not only exceedingly well but also very beautifully, like the pieces of a lost puzzle. If you like Hip-hop, Electronica, Rock, and Pop, then I cannot imagine you not eating this album up.

The album starts with the majestic album opener/new single “Symphonies”, which was created in the midst of losing the “HYPTNZ” track (due to legal reasons).

Symphonies

The song uses the same form of the “HYPTNZ” song but completely shines with Dan Black’s amazing songwriting. The album then proceeds to blow minds with such tracks as “Alone” (which uses an amazing bassline to hold it apart), “Pump My Pumps,” “Wonder,” and “Yours” (a masterpiece with its playfulness and catchy yet clever song writing).

Despite the list of standout tracks I gave, it must be noted that every song is unique and stands out in its own way. The only song that feels out of place/boring is the song “Cocoon,” but despite that the record is (for lack of a better word) pretty solid.

The songs are sequenced perfectly to transition from song to song. Having “Wonder” come after “Pump My Pumps” and coming before “Cigarette Packis utterly brilliant. Heck, even the alignment of “Alone,” ”Cocoon,” and “Yours” really works to the album’s advantage.

The album closer “Let Go” ends with an amazing guitar solo, which utterly seals the deal on making this one of 2009’s must hear albums.

Yours

This album is a fun listen and one you certainly can only listen to from start to finish. Dan Blacks music doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet is doing something in music that no one else is doing. Hats off to you, Mr. Dan Black.

Let's hear what you have to say.....
